A patent number is the identifier everything else hangs off. Assignments, searches, litigation, valuation and maintenance fee records all key from it.
Reading it correctly takes about a minute and tells you the patent type, the rough grant era, and whether the application published before grant.
What it does not tell you is whether the patent is still alive, which is the question that usually matters most.

Utility patents are the vast majority. A plain sequential number with no prefix is a utility patent covering how something works.
Numbers are assigned sequentially at grant, which makes them a rough date check. A number in the 11 million range is recent; one in the 5 million range is from the early 1990s and has long expired.

This is a sanity check, not a citation method. If someone cites US 6,123,456 as covering a technology invented in 2019, the number itself tells you something is wrong.
Kind codes
The letter and digit after the number describe the publication event.

A1 versus B is the distinction that catches people. A document numbered 2024/0123456 A1 is a published application, not a granted patent, and nothing in it is enforceable.
B1 versus B2 has a practical consequence. A B2 patent published as an application before grant, which means pre-grant provisional rights may be available. A B1 never published, so no pre-grant royalty period exists.
Patent numbers versus application numbers

The application series code changes over time. Series 17 and 18 are recent; older applications carry lower series codes. The series plus the six digits is the full application number.
Publication numbers include the year, which makes them easy to distinguish once you know the pattern. 2024/0123456 published in 2024 and may or may not ever grant.
All three appear on a granted patent's front page, which is the fastest way to connect them.
Finding the patent number for a product

Virtual marking is now normal. Instead of listing numbers on the product, a company prints a web address that maps products to patents. It satisfies the marking statute and is easier to keep current.
Assignee search is the fallback. If nothing is marked, searching the manufacturer's name in Google Patents or USPTO Patent Public Search gives you their portfolio to work through. Watch for name variants and former entity names.
Unmarked does not mean unpatented. Marking is optional; failing to mark only limits damages for the period before actual notice.
Numbers on foreign patents
Every country numbers independently, and the formats differ enough to be recognisable once you have seen them.

WO numbers are the most misread. A PCT application is a filing mechanism, not a granted right — no patent ever issues from the WO number itself. Someone citing a WO number as a patent is citing an application.
EP numbers need their kind code. EP 3 123 456 A1 is a published application; B1 is the granted patent. Without the code the number is ambiguous.
A granted European patent becomes national patents, each with its own national number in some countries, which is why one invention can carry a dozen numbers across a family.

Pending family members are the finding that changes decisions. A granted patent you can design around is a bounded problem; a granted patent with a live continuation behind it is not, because new claims can still be written.
Espacenet's family view is the fastest route to seeing every jurisdiction at once, and it is free.

Patent Center is the one people skip and should not. It answers the two questions the patent document cannot: is this patent still in force, and what happened during prosecution.

What changed from the first impression
The term is three years shorter than the filing date implied. The continuation chain means the twenty years run from 2013, not 2016 — a detail that would have overvalued the patent by three years.
The owner on the front page is wrong. Two recorded assignments since grant mean the party to approach is not the one printed on the document. See patent assignment database.
The second maintenance fee is due in 2027. That is a decision point for the owner and a data point for you — 21.2 points of each cohort drops out at that stage.
Twenty minutes, all free, and it changed the term, the counterparty and the timeline.

Nearly three in five utility patents lapse before term. A patent number cited in a demand letter or a product listing may identify something that entered the public domain years ago, and only Patent Center will tell you.
Design and plant patents are different. No maintenance fees are due, so they almost always run their full term. A D-prefixed number is far more likely to be live than a plain one of similar age. See types of patents.
Common number errors
Most failed lookups come from a small set of mistakes.

Transposition is the dangerous one, because sequential numbering means a wrong digit usually returns a real patent rather than an error. The result looks authoritative and is about something else entirely.
Always cross-check the title, assignee and date against what you expected. If a number cited as covering a medical device returns a patent about agricultural machinery, the number is wrong, not the classification.
In a demand letter or a diligence pack, verify every number independently. Numbers are copied between documents repeatedly, and errors propagate.

Always include the country code. Patent numbers repeat across jurisdictions, so a bare number is ambiguous. US 9,000,000 and EP 9,000,000 are unrelated documents.
Drop the commas for database searches. Most systems expect US10456789 as a single token, and commas cause failed lookups more often than anything else.

An assignment that does not list numbers is defective. "All intellectual property relating to the Product" is the most common serious drafting error, and it produces disputes about what actually transferred.
Include continuations and foreign counterparts by number too, or the family does not move with the sale. See patent assignment.
Buyers start from the number and work outward — term, status, ownership, encumbrances, family. A seller who has run the same checks first negotiates from a much stronger position.
Numbers in demand letters
A demand letter is a number plus an assertion, and the number is the part you can check independently.

Start with existence and status. A demand letter citing a patent that lapsed three years ago is not unheard of, and it takes ten minutes to establish.
Read the claims before responding. Demand letters describe the patent in broad terms; the claims define what it actually covers, and the gap is frequently large.
Check standing. The sender must own the patent to assert it, and the assignment record is public. See patent holder.
Patent number: the checklist
- Check the prefix first. No prefix means utility; D, PP and RE mean design, plant and reissue.
- Use the number as a rough date check. Sequential numbering makes an implausible claim obvious immediately.
- Read the kind code. A1 is an application, not a patent. B1 never published; B2 did.
- Distinguish patent, application and publication numbers. All three appear on a granted patent's front page.
- Do not calculate term from the filing date alone. Check Related U.S. Application Data for an earlier parent.
- Add the Patent Term Adjustment printed on the front page.
- Check maintenance fee status in Patent Center. The number proves grant, not survival.
- Check the assignment record. The front-page assignee reflects ownership at grant and never updates.
- Search by assignee if a product is unmarked. Unmarked does not mean unpatented.
- Always cite with the country code, and drop the commas when searching databases.
